Timss

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international assessment of the mathematics and science knowledge of 4th and 8th grade students around the world (equivalent to Year 5 and Year 9 in Malta, respectively).

TIMSS was developed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) to allow participating nations to compare students’ educational achievement across borders. TIMSS was first administered in 1995, and every 4 years thereafter.

Malta has participated in TIMSS 2007, TIMSS 2015, and TIMSS 2023 with Year 9 students, and in TIMSS 2011 and TIMSS 2019 with Year 5 students. Results for TIMSS 2023 were published in December 2024. Malta’s preparations are underway to take part in the next cycle of TIMSS 2027 with Year 5 students.
